This learning adventure is best suited for budding geologists, geochemists, geothermal energy advocates, and outdoor enthusiasts aged 11-13, who are keen to put their curiosity to work on the ground in the stunning islands of the Azores and love active outdoor adventures like hiking, kayaking, & swimming.

In the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, roughly halfway between Portugal and France the United States, lie the Azores, an enchanting archipelago of nine volcanic islands bursting from the sea at a triple junction where three large tectonic plates meet. It’s hard to dream up a better landscape than this to ignite the curiosity of our team of budding Earth Scientists!
Over our month-long discovery process, we will uncover the story of how our planet moves and shifts to create the landscapes and ecologies that we live in, taking some deeper dives into how these geologic tales underpin culture.
Our month of learning will end with a final learning showcase where each student will present their findings and explorations.

- For the final project for this particular trip it is useful for all students to have access to a personal iPad or laptop computer with Google Slides and Google.
- Drive for the last 2 classroom days.
- Daily ticket cost associated with entering and swimming in the hot springs at Caldeiras Velha and Poca da Dona Beija. We will take a field trip near here with parents and siblings invited but the option to swim is for each family to decide and cover the minimal ticket costs for.
